How We Research, Build, and Maintain Our Tax & Payroll Calculators
I am a web developer with more than 8 years of hands-on experience creating financial applications and interactive calculators. This website and all its tools are the result of my deep commitment to understanding and simplifying complex payroll and tax topics for everyday users.
My goal is to build practical, user-friendly tools that help people better understand their paycheck deductions — especially in areas where many existing calculators fall short, such as California’s State Disability Insurance (SDI) calculations.
Why This Project Exists
After working on various financial tools over the years, I noticed recurring inaccuracies and outdated logic in popular payroll calculators. Issues like the uncapped 1.3% SDI rate in California were either handled incorrectly or not updated properly. This observation motivated me to research the topic thoroughly and develop tools that address these real gaps.
Our Research and Development Process
1. Primary Source Collection All data and logic used in our calculators come exclusively from official, publicly available government sources. We do not rely on third-party interpretations or unofficial summaries. Key sources include:
- Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publications (such as Pub 15, Pub 15-T, Pub 17)
- California Employment Development Department (EDD) official website and notices
- California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) guidelines and tax tables
- State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) rate schedules
- Federal and California tax withholding tables
- Official legislative updates and government press releases
2. In-Depth Study and Analysis I dedicate substantial time to reading and understanding the original documents. This involves:
- Carefully reviewing full PDF publications and rate tables
- Comparing previous years’ rules with current updates
- Analyzing how different tax components interact with each other (e.g., how SDI interacts with Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax)
- Studying edge cases such as high-income earners, supplemental wages, multiple pay periods, and special tax situations
3. Formula Implementation Once I fully understand the rules, I translate them into accurate calculation logic. Every formula is implemented based on the official methodology published by the relevant government agencies. Special attention is given to complex areas like:
- Uncapped SDI calculations for high earners
- Annual wage base limits
- Interaction between federal and state tax rules
- Proper handling of withholding allowances and deductions
4. Verification and Cross-Checking Accuracy is a top priority. After implementing each calculation:
- Results are tested against official tax tables and known examples
- Multiple test cases (low income, middle income, high income) are run
- Calculations are cross-verified with different official documents
- When new tax updates are announced, I re-verify all affected tools before updating them
5. Continuous Monitoring and Updates Tax laws and rates change regularly. I monitor official government channels for new announcements and update the calculators as quickly as possible. Each tool shows its “Last Updated” date so users know the freshness of the information.
Technical Standards
All tools on this site are built with modern, secure web technologies. User data is handled with care, and no unnecessary personal information is collected or stored.
Important Limitations and Transparency
I am not a licensed CPA, tax attorney, or payroll professional.
I am a developer who builds these tools after extensive research into official public documents and guidelines. While I strive for high accuracy through careful study and verification, I am not a tax expert.
All calculators on this website are provided for educational and estimation purposes only. The results should be used as a helpful reference, not as official tax advice or a replacement for professional consultation.
Tax rules are often complex and can depend heavily on individual circumstances (filing status, multiple jobs, deductions, credits, etc.). Small details can significantly change final outcomes. Therefore, we strongly recommend that users consult with a qualified licensed CPA or tax professional before making any important financial or tax decisions.
Our Transparency Commitment
- We only use official government sources
- We clearly explain our methodology on this page
- We do not guarantee 100% accuracy due to possible changes in tax law or interpretation
- We welcome user feedback if any calculation appears inconsistent with official sources
- We update this Methodology page whenever there is a significant change in our process
Final Note
My mission is to make payroll and tax information more accessible and understandable for regular working people. By combining technical development skills with consistent research of official tax resources, I aim to deliver tools that users can rely on for estimation and learning purposes.
Thank you for using our calculators. We hope they help you gain better clarity on your tax and payroll matters.
